Chosun Taekwondo Celebrates Relocation Ceremony

— For the past 16 years, students needed to climb a steep flight of stairs to reach the Chosun Taekwondo Academy and Hatha Yoga Center on the top floor of 62 Main St. in downtown Warwick. But now that’s history.

On Saturday, April 30, Town of Warwick Supervisor Michael Sweeton Mayor Michael Newhard and Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Michael Johndrow joined owners Doug and Patty Cook, their guests, instructors and students for a Grand Relocation Celebration to mark their move to 60 Galloway Road.

The search for more space

Sharing the attractive plaza with business neighbors Anytime Fitness and TNT Burgers, long-time Warwick residents Doug and Patty Cook will continue offering their authentic brand of traditional taekwondo and hatha yoga in the all-new, three-thousand square foot, ground floor facility with plentiful parking and quick access to Route 17A.

Also on hand for the ceremonies were many notable martial artists. And festivities included an official ribbon cutting, retrospective video, taekwondo demonstration, refreshments and congratulatory comments by martial arts-legend Grandmaster Richard Chun, a ninth degree black belt and founder of the United States Taekwondo Association.

“My wife Patty and I had been searching for a new location in Warwick with more space for years,” said Cook. “After nearly two decades of continuous growth, we desperately needed it. When we discovered that several buildings were being renovated on Galloway Road, we leaped at the opportunity to relocate and still remain in the village.”

Holistically oriented curriculum

He explained that unlike the vast majority of martial arts schools that cater mainly to children, the Chosun Taekwondo Academy features an unusually high percentage of adults due to a holistically oriented curriculum focusing on genuine Korean defensive doctrine, martial arts philosophy, meditation and internal energy, or Ki, development.

In addition, the academy offers an extensive hatha yoga program taught by Patty Cook, in conjunction with a wide range of unlimited taekwondo classes throughout the day and evening, all taught by qualified, adult black belt instructors.
